Growing up in the late seventies and early eighties in rural South Carolina, one thing I learned very early was the thing that made America great was our freedom, and our free market economy. We ridiculed the Soviet Union because of their silly reliance on a government controlled command economy run by the “all-knowing” government.
We knew the politicos in the Soviet Union lived well because of bribery and graft. This corruption is inherent in a system where the ability of a select group of men to determine what business receives the benefit of government support is worth billions of dollars.
But this system eventually failed under the weight of corruption and bureaucratic management.
These days, as I watch our own state government I see we are living under the same failed command economy.
We have a Chairman of the Senate Finance committee, Hugh Leatherman, who is quoted in The State newspaper on March 7 of last year saying, “If we let the free market work, we’d be back in the 1800’s.”
This past Tuesday, that same commissar… I mean chairman… held a committee meeting on an economic incentive package for Amazon.com without the opportunity for public comment. The AP reported Tuesday that Leatherman said a detailed public hearing wasn't needed.
The leadership of our General Assembly has published their economic plan for South Carolina. They summarize it with a graphic in the shape of a pyramid with the South Carolina Research Authority (SCRA) at the top, managing the economy of South Carolina. Throughout the pyramid you see how the government will manage our economy with words like grants, incentives, incremental tax credits. The pyramid shows that these will be used by entities like Endowed Chairs, the Knowledge Sector Council, and the SCRA Executive committee.
Where do they see good ole’ South Carolina hard work and ingenuity in this formula? Consumer demand? Small business? It is simply not part of their plan.
Are we going to continue to let our economy turn into the Soviet economy we ridiculed as children?
Are we going to continue to let the select few Comrades of South Carolina continue to wield their influence and select the winners and losers behind closed doors?
Then let’s start with Amazon.com!
Call your State Senator and tell him you don’t want special government incentives for any company. And especially no special tax breaks for Amazon.com. Tell him to oppose S.808.
You can find who your Senator is and his contact information at by clicking on this link.
He will likely tell you that South Carolina has already committed to this deal and that, “I am a man of my word.”
You can remind him that he did not make that commitment. Unless, of course, you happened to be talking to Comrade Leatherman... he was one of the few who did commit to it.
Remind your Senator that only a few individuals made that commitment, and that it was a commitment they did not have the authority to make on behalf of South Carolina. Only the full General Assembly with the Governor has the authority to commit our state to change laws.
Remind him that if we let these select few get away with railroading the General Assembly into this commitment, then what’s to stop them from doing it the next time, and the next time, and the next.
It’s gotta stop somewhere!
It must stop now!
I don’t want to live in Soviet South Carolina! Do you?
Please call your State Senator and tell him to stop the special tax break for Amazon.com. Tell him to vote no for S.808.

If we don’t stop this, then we may be standing in line to buy toilet paper in the future.
Thanks for all you do!
