COLUMBIA — Today’s Iowa caucus could determine whether Mitt Romney will have to grunt through South Carolina’s GOP primary before finally arriving bruised at the party nomination, or whether an early win for the Mormon ex-governor will boost his image in the eyes of South Carolina’s evangelical Christians.

In the meantime, Iowa’s Republican winner is hard to predict.

A poll taken Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 of Iowans by Public Policy Polling put Texas congressman Ron Paul at 20 percent, Romney at 19 percent, and former U.S. senator Rick Santorum at 18 percent. Former Georgia congressman and House speaker Newt Gingrich received 14 percent, Texas Gov. Rick Perry 10 percent, Minnesota congresswoman Michele Bachmann at 8 percent, ex-Utah governor Jon Huntsman at 4 percent, and ex-Louisiana governor Buddy Roemer at 2 percent. . . .
