- Cap spending. State spending grew by 20% last year and revenues are projected to grow an additional 20% in 2012. Simply put, state government is too big and tries to do too much. This year, instead of using the new money to expand government programs and create new ones, we should pay down state debt and/or issue rebates to taxpayers.
- Stop favoritism. Most know about the corruption in DC, but few realize Columbia politicians also run a favor mill, and that annual state giveaways have grown from $34 million in 1998 to over $1 billion last year. It is time for us to cut taxes across-the-board, for everyone, not just for the well-connected who hire the right lobbyists.
- Expand freedom. Our goal should be to make South Carolina the freest state in the nation, with individuals empowered to solve their own problems and government limited to a few core functions. That includes removing barriers to a free market in health care, increasing school choices for parents, and opting out of overreaching federal programs.
I regularly provide legislative updates, and I invite you to follow and interact with me on Facebook and Twitter. Let's make 2012 a great year for South Carolina.
Sincerely,
Tom Davis
State Senator for Beaufort County
